If you “Google” this question, you’re sure to find plenty of articles extolling the benefits of essential oils for helping with weight loss. However, this year at the Young Living Convention we were excited to discover the actual scientific reasons that essential oils can help you maintain a healthy weight — or even slim down!
Dr. Lindsey Elmore, Young Living’s Director of Global Education and Health Sciences, shared some interesting science with us at convention which explained why they can now say that “Yes! Essential oils may indeed help us lose weight” in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise.
Young Living released a new product this year called Slique CitraSlim™, which is formulated with naturally derived ingredients to promote healthy weight management when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise.*
It contains sinetrol which is a polyphenol. Polyphenols are the aromatic properties of the plant. Sinetrol is actually a type of flavonoid that occurs in citrus plants. Flavenoids have been found to help reduce waist and hip circumference.
Not only do flavonoids help you lose fat around the middle, they also block fat cell differentiation. What does that mean? Cell differentiation is when one big fat cell splits into two cells, and those cells split into more cells, making it difficult for your body to destroy. The flavonoids in the citrus oils help to stop this process from happening, making it easier for you body to break down the fat cells. They also release free fatty acids from larger, hard-to-break-down triglycerides, which also makes the fat easier for the body to break down.
Now while most weight loss programs out there do indeed help you loose weight, most of the time you lose muscle mass and well as fat. The sinetrol in the citrus oils contained in Slique CitraSlim helps to maintain and may even increase lean muscle mass. Sinetrol also reduces oxidative stress in the body by increasing the body’s ability to reduce inflammation and increase detoxification.
For those people that want to research, it will be very difficult to find scientific studies on sinetrol, because it is a very complex molecule. But you will be able to find research on naringenin, naringin, and hespertin, which are three flavenoids contained in sinetrol.
Ways to incorporate citrus oils into your daily routine
The Vitality™ line of essential oils are approved for internal use. You could use the Citrus Vitality oils in the following ways:
- Put a few drops of Grapefruit in an empty capsule and take one in the morning and one in the afternoon (Note: Do not make capsules up ahead of time as the oils can dissolve them.)
- Add a drop of Orange, Lemon, or Citrus Fresh to your water and drink this when you experience food cravings
